世界上充满了异类生物。这些异类有光明的，也有黑暗的。他们可以进入冥界，可以完成被人类称为魔法的种种行为。一千年前，代表光明的军队与代表黑暗的军队狭路相逢，展开了一场恶战。双方势均力敌，为了避免两败伤，双方签订了一项为期一千年的合约和几项模糊的协议。
　　时光荏苒，一千年后，两支军队的首领-格谢尔(符拉季米尔・门少夫饰)和扎乌龙(维克多尔・维尔热宾茨基饰)生活在今日的莫斯科。其他的巡查队员都在他们的领导下工作。守夜人跟踪黑暗的异己势力，他们的使命是维持善与恶之间的平衡；而守日人的工作则是监视光明力量的活动，一旦善恶比例失衡就会引起战争、革命、毁灭甚至全世界的灾难。
　　不久前刚刚开始外科工作的光明魔法师安东・格洛节茨基(康斯坦丁・哈宾斯基饰)是守夜人的一份子。安东曾犯下一个巨大的错误，在成年仪式前，安东曾由于无知而被巫婆利用，差点杀死自己未出世的儿子。安东的监视对象是住在楼上的吸血鬼科斯佳(阿列科谢・恰达夫饰)。虽然安东根本就不赞同一千年前的合约，但是他仍旧在巡查队中工作。
　　日子一天天过着，但危险却随着千年合约的逐渐消散而渐渐显露。一个拥有着无限潜能的小男孩出现了，而这个孩子就是差点被安东亲手杀死的儿子--叶戈尔。叶戈尔拥有着打破光明黑暗两派平衡的力量，谁得到他都会取得最后的胜利。于是，为了争夺终极力量的人魔大战开始了。叶戈尔将走向光明还是走向黑暗？自此世界开始崩溃
影片融合了令人眼花缭乱的特技效果，血腥异常，据称视觉风格类似《搏击俱乐部》、《七宗罪》和《终结者2》。
　　这部电影根据俄罗斯作家塞尔盖・鲁嘉南柯（Sergei Lukyanenko）的畅销科幻小说三部曲改编，演员阵容融合了前苏联时期的著名演员和活跃在当今演艺界的电视明星，除了音响部门之外，全部后期制作和特技班底都由俄罗斯人组成。
　　在每张票价200卢布（相当于7美元）的前提下，这部效仿《指环王》系列的奇幻大片在本土上映11天以来已经拿到了850万美元的票房，轻易击败比它上映多一个礼拜的《蜘蛛侠2》（550万美元票房），只比当年同一时段的《指环王：王者归来》少50万美元票房。
　　目前，影片已经迅速赢得了一大批cult追随者，他们把《守夜人》与《黑客帝国》、《星球大战》甚至《指环王》相提并论，连一贯倾向艺术片的俄罗斯影评人也对它赞不绝口，称其“充满才智，非常血腥、优美而且昂贵”。
